Tanktastic: The beginning!

This is the first in a series of articles about my experiences as a tank in the World of Warcraft and as such I'm going to start with an odd confession. I've never played a tank before!

While it may not seem like much keep in mind that when it comes to venturing in dungeons you are limited to one of 3 roles; healer, damage and tank. To say you've not tried one of those roles is to say you've only experienced, at best, two thirds of the World of Warcraft.

Determined to correct this and because I hadn't much else to do while waiting for 'Spacemarine' I created my first warrior.

My first step was to get some equipment. As I was aware how easy it is to level I decided heirloom items were the best option. That way I wouldn't have to worry about my equipment so much. Heirloom items are ones that can be purchased by higher level characters and passed down to any low level ones that you make. Their statistics increase as you level so you constantly find yourself wearing the best equipment and don't have to worry about upgrading it. The only drawback with heirlooms is that they are quite “expensive” in Wow terms and mine took some time to acquire. Eventually though my new warrior was armed with a number of shiny and somewhat overpowered items.

After levelling to 15 it was time to start running dungeons. Nervously I put my character in the queue using the dungeon finder.

Within seconds I found myself in the Deadmines. Not my first choice for a starting dungeon but it would have to do. Charging towards my first enemy, with my allies just behind me I hoped that the articles I had read had given me good advice. Sadly a miss click nearly spelled disaster as my shiny new hero pounced on one of the usable cannons. Fun indeed but not very helpful to the rest of my group who were quickly set upon by the numerous enemies.

Things got back on track quickly though and I soon found myself going through the dungeon at a decent speed. That was until an excitable hunter decided to open fire on the entire room, including a boss character. We didn't last very long and while I wasn't particularly grateful I bit my tongue and resolved to continue. That is until the healer seemed to suffer some kind of breakdown. After forgetting how to get back to the dungeon they shouted repeatedly that they were “in the horde place” and left. At that point I thought it best to leave as well. Perhaps my next dungeon will go a bit better?
