Lets be honest, Halloween probably isn't for us any more. Dressing up in costumes and asking people for sugary treats would probably get you a funny look at best. Of course Halloween isn't just about sweets it's about being scared witless, So to help you on the way here is a list of games that can ensure you don't sleep properly for a while.
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
An action adventure game set in what could quite easily be a H.P. Lovecraft novel. What really sets Eternal Darkness apart from other games in the genre is it's use of the sanity meter. Stay in the presence of an undead horror for a bit too long and your grasp on reality diminishes. When this happen not only does your character take damage but the game starts to play tricks on you. Try to save with your sanity meter low and the game shows you a cruel animation of your save files being deleted. Walk into a room and you might just find yourself ambushed by far too many monsters than should be possible. A cruel and disturbing trick but an effective one none the less!
Resident Evil
The game that spawned a genre. While the latest offerings seem to be a return to form, it's the original that most gamers recall fondly. From the cheesy dialogue to the terrible FMV introduction, this had all the markings of a B movie horror. Don't let yourself be fooled however, this game still knew how to scare you. Thinking yourself safe in the mansion after escaping an unknown horror you wander down a narrow corridor, it's then that a number of undead canine leap through the window and remind you that you're never truly safe in this classic horror game.
Condemned: Criminal Origins
Trapping you in a city full of violent homicidal maniacs and making you hunt a serial killer who has framed you for the murder of two police officers, you'd expect Condemned would at least provide you with enough firearms to supply a small army. Instead you'd be lucky to find a pistol. Condemned forces you to fight hand to hand with the criminal elements that inhabit “Metro City” leaving you constantly in suspense as you navigate dark and sinister settings such as an abandoned Mall. It's this suspense coupled with some truly nightmarish set pieces that make Condemned a must play for Halloween. Though you might want to leave the lights on.
Fear
You would be forgiven for thinking Fear is just a standard shooter. The military enemies, the vast array of high tech weapons and the fact your character has the amazing ability to slip into bullet time at will. Unfortunately all those abilities count for very little when your enemy is a psychically charged little girl who has a tendency to turn soldiers inside out for fun. Suddenly the dark office buildings become sinister and every shadow contains dark malevolent creatures. That shotgun suddenly counts for very little.
Silent Hill
Everyone has a favourite Silent Hill game. Some prefer the subtle and suspenseful experience of the first two games, while others prefer the more cinematic horror that features in the later sequels. No matter your preference, a Silent Hill game guarantees nightmares. Particularly if you play them in the dark. Which I wouldn't recommend.
