Castle defence games are everywhere on the iPhone so a new one on the Apple store shouldn't draw a great deal of excitement but this one is different. It has something that no other game on the iPhone has. It has a boom stick!

In Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell played a wise cracking, ass kicking, occasionally bumbling hero who faced off against hordes of the undead released by an ancient text, the Necronomicon ex Mortis. Sent back to medieval times he was forced to ally himself with an army of knights to defend the book from a twisted evil version of himself. Thankfully he was armed with a boomstick and chainsaw for an arm. The film was brilliant but does the game do it justice?

The game is fairly simple, you have to defend the Necrocomicon on one side of the level from the undead approaching on the other. You control Ash, who is pretty good in a fight, with his chainsaw hand and trademark boomstick but you can't take on an army by yourself so thankfully the game provides you soldiers to send out to battle. As the level progresses your blacksmith provides you with metal that you can use to purchase units that.range from heavy infantry soldiers that don't deal a lot of damage but can take a large amount of punishment to archers that pick off enemies from a far. Enemies drop coins that allow you to improve your allies and your own abilities between levels. It's a simple mechanic but in the later levels you really need to plan which units you will take to the fight as selecting the wrong ones could be your undoing!

The graphics are impressive and the extra effort that was put into making an intro definitely adds to the charm of the game. The sound however is the best bit, the music suits the battle and while the unit's battle cries can become annoying they add do add to the novelty of the game. The best bit though is the use of Bruce Campbell's one liners from the films that he spouts periodically as he saws his way through the undead hordes.

Army of Darkness is a well implemented castle defence game and even when the Evil Dead theme wears a bit thin you will quite happily sink hours into this excellent game.
