News: Transmogrification comes to the World of Warcraft

It's safe to say that the old paladin 'Judgement' set was one of the best looking armour sets to grace the plains of Azeroth. From the glowing hood to the detailed and potentially lethal daggers that adorned it's shoulders. The Judgement set let Paladins deal divine retribution and look good while doing so. Sadly though with a pitiful item level it's unlikely that you'll see it in the end game raiding of today.

Paladins aren't alone though, every player has a set item or weapon that they love, for aesthetic or sentimental reasons these treasured items sit unused in the bank for the sake of the player's nostalgia.

Thankfully though Blizzard or rather the “Ethereals” have decided to introduce a mechanism that will see these much loved items back in use. .http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

“Visiting a Transmogrifier will present players with a new interface that will allow them to change the appearance of an item while retaining its original stats. This means that you can raid in your paladin tier 12 Immolation set, but look like you’re wearing Lightbringer, while priests can bring Benediction back – at least in spirit. Hunters can once again roam the jungles of Stranglethorn Vale in their tier 2 Dragonstalker set. ”

So what do we know about the process of transmogrification?

  • Only items with stats can be transmogrified. So no disguising your ”Sword of a Thousand Truths” as a humble copper sword.
  • Heirlooms are eligible to be transmogrified.
  • There will be a price for this process. Ethereals aren't known for their generosity.
  • You won't be able to change the armour type of an item so there is no chance of disguising your plate as a humble wizard's robe.
  • You will be able to change the type of guns, bows and crossbows. So while you may be wielding a very effective bow it can appear as your trusted boomstick with all the racial benefits that type allows.
  • Weapons and off-hand items can only be transmogrified into similarly slotted items. So no dual wielding staffs. Unfortunately.

There are a few questions around the process of Transmogrification, the biggest being how will the process work? Would a player just select from a massive list of items or would they have to own the item whose appearance they want to copy? While the former would be simpler the latter does give those higher level characters an opportunity to revisit some of the great old content.

No matter what happens 4.3 looks like it's going to be bringing a lot of new things to the World of Warcraft .Void storage, a revamped Dark Moon faire, new heirlooms and new titles to name but a few.

Come get some! Army of Darkness Defence

Seller:

Backflip Studios

Genre:

Castle defence

Updated:

Jun 08, 2011

Castle defence games are everywhere on the iPhone so a new one on the Apple store shouldn't draw a great deal of excitement but this one is different. It has something that no other game on the iPhone has. It has a boom stick!

In Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell played a wise cracking, ass kicking, occasionally bumbling hero who faced off against hordes of the undead released by an ancient text, the Necronomicon ex Mortis. Sent back to medieval times he was forced to ally himself with an army of knights to defend the book from a twisted evil version of himself. Thankfully he was armed with a boomstick and chainsaw for an arm. The film was brilliant but does the game do it justice?

The game is fairly simple, you have to defend the Necrocomicon on one side of the level from the undead approaching on the other. You control Ash, who is pretty good in a fight, with his chainsaw hand and trademark boomstick but you can't take on an army by yourself so thankfully the game provides you soldiers to send out to battle. As the level progresses your blacksmith provides you with metal that you can use to purchase units that.range from heavy infantry soldiers that don't deal a lot of damage but can take a large amount of punishment to archers that pick off enemies from a far. Enemies drop coins that allow you to improve your allies and your own abilities between levels. It's a simple mechanic but in the later levels you really need to plan which units you will take to the fight as selecting the wrong ones could be your undoing!

The graphics are impressive and the extra effort that was put into making an intro definitely adds to the charm of the game. The sound however is the best bit, the music suits the battle and while the unit's battle cries can become annoying they add do add to the novelty of the game. The best bit though is the use of Bruce Campbell's one liners from the films that he spouts periodically as he saws his way through the undead hordes.

Army of Darkness is a well implemented castle defence game and even when the Evil Dead theme wears a bit thin you will quite happily sink hours into this excellent game.

SO MUCH RAGE!: Rage HD Review

Seller:

id Software

Genre:

3D on the rails shooter

Updated:

Aug 03, 2011Release Date:

When a free game comes your way, you don't really expect a great deal. Perhaps a bit of entertainment, maybe a novel concept or some good looking visual effects. As long as it helps kill some time then you're probably going to be content. If this is what you think when you download Rage HD however you're going to be pleasantly surprised.

Rage doesn't get you off to a good start though. The opening video is a trailer for the full game and the menu option to pre order isn't subtle and only serves to cheapen the experience. Then you get to spend about 10 minutes trying to work out which control type suits you best, finally settling on the default tilt to look method.

As you plunge into your first game you're introduced to the core mechanics. Tap the shoot button to kill or pick up items, tap another button to dodge, tap the button in the top corner to reload, here's a shotgun, a pistol and an assault rifle. Here's your ammo count, here are some mutants, go kill them, try not to get hit too much and don't forget to have fun as you go. It's all simple and well implemented, but you can't help but notice you're effectively playing an on the rails shooter. You can overlook that for now though as there's plenty going off on screen to distract you.

Touring the post apocalyptic setting numerous mutants appear at different intervals that will try their best to ruin your fun. Some will throw things at you, while others prefer to get up close and personal with which ever pointy or heavy implement they have found. Some will only take a single shot before falling on their faces while other ones have had their mutant Weetabix and require a few more hits to take down. Eventually though you get to learn the pattern of monsters as well as the location of those crucial ammo crates and targets that give you bonus points. So while the game might seem repetitive in that respect, survival isn't the sole objective in Rage, it's all about the high scores.

To help you on your way to the top of the leader board Rage provides you with a score multiplier system. Your multiplier increases as you shoot monsters, pick up cash and hit targets, it's all quite straight forward but keep in mind your multiplier is reset as soon as you take a hit. It's harsh and will probably lead to your iPhone hurtling through the air much like the rock that you failed to dodge, but it makes the game very addictive.

Visually the game is very slick from the well animated and detailed monsters to the dreary but realistic looking settings everything looks impressive. Thankfully though the aesthetics don't come at a price as the game maintains a decent frame rate throughout.

You will find yourself going back to Rage HD, the simple on the rails shooter coupled with the addictive multiplier system and competitive leader boards make it a worth while game. If you can forgive it for being an interactive trailer for the upcoming big title then you're rewarded with a great looking and fun game.
